Zachary Mezzo is a composer and violinist based in Brooklyn. His work pushes beyond traditional expectations through the use of electronic processing and a focus on physicality in performance. Zach’s music blends delicate atmospheres, rhythmic urgency, and noise, combining classical forms with experimental electronic and off-beat popular music. His recent EP Proximity (cmntx records), and accompanying live solo set, introduces a raw production style to his existing practice and expands the sound world of modern violin. In addition to his concert pieces and work as a solo artist, Zach often scores film or visual art projects and is a member of the punk band Catcher. In 2021, he received a B.M. in Music Theory and Composition from NYU where he studied with Justin Dello Joio and Michael Gordon and additionally studied composition and orchestration at École Normale de Musique de Paris under composer Michel Merlet. During his time in Paris, he also completed a course in electronic music and sound spatialization at IRCAM. Zach’s music has been performed by ensembles such as JACK Quartet, Bearthoven Trio, Unheard-of Ensemble and more. Outside of music, Zach is an avid runner and speed chess enthusiast.
